  2.        Mixing Your own Flash Powder
  3. It is easy to get a file on how to make salutes, or how to make "meal powder,"
  4. but, in the files I've read, they just use the generic term "flash powder" to
  5. mean the explosive stuff in your fireworks.
  6. There are 2 types of explosives.  Type I uses a non-explosive flash powder.
  7. "How can this be?" you ask?  Well, the retort from a type I explosive comes
  8. from the rupturing of the case, not from the detonation of the powder.  But
  9. we've all lit off M-80s, which have only a flimsy casing, which couldn't
  10. possibly account for the loud, ear-ringing bang you get from one.  That comes
  11. from a more powerful powder which explodes when lit.  This is a type ][
  12. explosive.  Potassium and barium nitrate powders, as well as black powder are
  13. used in type I explosives.  Potassium chlorate and perchlorate powders are used
  14. in type ][ explosives.  The list below has formulas for both types.

  16. Potassium perchlorate mixtures:
  17. 1-  50% potassium perchlorate
  18.     25% dark pyro aluminum
  19.     25% sulfur flour
  20.  
  21. 2-  70% potassium perchlorate
  22.     30% black german aluminum
  23.  
  24. 3-  50% potassium perchlorate
  25.     30% black antimony sulfide
  26.     20% sulfur flour
  27.  
  28. 4-  75% potassium perchlorate
  29.     25% dark pyro aluminum
  30.  
  31. 5-  60% potassium perchlorate
  32.     40% sulfur flour
  33.  
  34.  
  35. Potassium chlorate mixtures (note 1)

  37. 1-  50% potassium chlorate
  38.     50% red arsenic sulfide
  39.  
  40. 2-  60% potassium chlorate
  41.     25% sulfur flour
  42.     10% potassium nitrate
  43.      5% red arsenic sulfide

  46. Barium/potassium nitrate (type I)
  47.  
  48. 1-  50% potassium nitrate
  49.     30% sulfur flour
  50.     20% dark pyro aluminum
  51.  
  52. 2-  50% potassium nitrate
  53.     50% 100 mesh magnesium
  54.  
  55. 3-  60% potassium nitrate
  56.     30% sulfur flour
  57.     10% charcoal dust
  58.  
  59. 4-  50% barium nitrate     (note 2)
  60.     50% 100 mesh magnesium
  61.  
  62. 5-  50% strontium nitrate  (note 2)
  63.     50% 100 mesh magnesium
  64.  
  65. note 1- Chlorate mixtures are EXTREMELY dangerous.  Don't mix them unless you
  66. like playing russian roulette.

  68. note 2- These mixtures give colored flashes.

  70. Mixing fireworks is very dangerous, and, I personally would never, ever, not-in-
  71. a-million-years ever mix them.  For all you sickos out there who do, I assume no
  72. responsibility for any damage you fiendishly cause, or any injury that results
  73. from the manufature or use of the explosives detailed here.  This was for
